Zeeland Public Schools proudly marked the beginning of construction on the much-anticipated Zeeland East and Zeeland West Tennis and Soccer/Lacrosse Sports Complex. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 25th, and numerous stakeholders were in attendance, including students, staff, and community members. This is one of the current projects to gain momentum as part of the district’s five-year bond initiative.
Project Overview
The Sports Complex is funded by a bond passed by voters in May 2021. Community feedback shaped the project by supporting student educational and extracurricular experience at the forefront.
Located on a 35-acre site previously used for agriculture, the complex will feature two synthetic soccer and lacrosse fields, each allocated to Zeeland East or Zeeland West. With seating for 500 spectators per field, the facility includes home and visitor dugouts and a press box. The sports complex will also house 16 tennis courts, eight per school, complete with shade shelters. Concrete pathways will link the Complex to both high school buildings.
Zeeland West Athletic Director Jordan Bandstra said of the Complex, “This new sports complex is not just about fields and courts—it’s about what happens on them. It’s about the hard work, the school spirit, and meaningful relationships that will be on full display here for years to come.” Zeeland East Athletic Director Josh Glerum added, “Thank you to our Zeeland Community. Your continued support makes it possible for us to provide top-tier facilities and experiences that will leave lasting memories for generations to come.”
Superintendent Dr. Brandi-Lyn Mendham remarked, “This complex will be more than just new fields and courts; it will be a hub for teamwork, dedication, and school pride to thrive. We are thrilled to mark today as the start of a new and exciting chapter for our students, schools, and community.”
The construction is being managed by Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. and GDK Construction, with design work provided by TowerPinkster Architecture.
